Summer Road Trip, Alcatraz, Part 1

Our big trip for the summer was an ambitious drive up north with the final destination as Portland, Oregon. First, we stopped in Walnut Creek for three nights and planned a day trip to Alcatraz Island and Angel Island. Kim's family joined us as well. We booked our tickets in advance through Alcatraz Cruises, and met up at Pier 35 for the boat ride. It was quite chilly and gusty while we sailed! Once on Alcatraz, it was quite warm. We were given an audio tour and learned a lot about the unique prison system. Check out the open showers, and the multi-level cells. The grounds outside were beautiful and if the prisoners could even get a glimpse of the outside world, it must have been painfully difficult to be imprisoned at Alcatraz.
